Reflections on the German funding program Model Projects Smart Cities

Seit 2019 fördert die Bundesregierung deutsche Städte, Gemeinden und Kreise mit dem Programm Modellprojekte Smart City (MPSC). Die Autor:innen dieses Artikels konnten die zweite und dritte Auswahlrunde des Programms mit Fachgutachten unterstützen und durch anschließende Interviews mit antragstellenden Kommunen weitere Einblicke erlangen. Dieser Artikel entstand nach der abgeschlossenen Auswahl der dritten Staffel von Projekten im Jahr 2021, um über das Programm, dessen Inhalte und Bedeutung für die Stadtentwicklung in Deutschland zu reflektieren.

Since 2019, the German government has been funding cities, municipalities and districts with the Model Projects Smart City (MPSC) program. The authors of this article were able to support the second and third selection rounds of the program with expert opinions and gain further insights through subsequent interviews with applicant municipalities. This article was written after the selection of the third round of projects was completed in 2021 in order to reflect on the program, its content and significance for urban development in Germany.
