Learning by Doing: GenZ Bushof

Stadtentwicklung rund um den Aachener Bushof aus Perspektive Jugendlicher

Am Beispiel des Aachener Bushofs untersucht die hier vorgestellte Arbeit, wie Jugendliche Stadt wahrnehmen und machen. An diesem Ort, einem wichtigen Knotenpunkt der Aachener Innenstadt, versammelt sich eine Vielzahl der Probleme und Fragestellungen, die uns im Rahmen der großen Transformation bevorstehen und zukünftige Generationen herausfordern werden: einerseits ökologische Fragen, andererseits soziale. Die sogenannte Generation Z, geboren zwischen 1997 und 2010, wird einen Großteil der Transformationsprozesse des 21. Jahrhunderts miterleben und gestalten, deshalb ist es wichtig zu fragen: Wie kann Stadt das Wachsen und Lernen junger Menschen unterstützen? Wie werden aus ihnen Akteur*innen des großen bevorstehenden Wandels? Was ist die Rolle der Planung in diesem Kontext? Diese Arbeit soll Teil eines Schrittes hin zu einer Planungskultur sein, die Transformationsprozesse nachhaltig unterstützt und Menschen befähigt, sie aktiv mitzugestalten. Im Sinne eines prozesshaften Experimentierens und Lernens am Projekt war das Ergebnis offen und von einem explorativen Forschungsansatz geprägt. Systeme sind komplex und hier wird lediglich ein erster Einblick und eine einzelne Perspektive vorgestellt.

Using Aachen’s main bus station as an example, the work presented here examines how young people perceive and produce the city. This place, an important junction of Aachen’s city center, congregates a multitude of the problems and issues that we are facing in the context of the great transformation and that will challenge future generations: ecological issues on the one hand, social issues on the other. The so-called Generation Z, born between 1997 and 2010, will experience and shape a large part of the transformation processes of the 21st century, so it is important to ask: How can the city support the growing and learning of young people? How do they become agents of the great change to come? What is the role of planning in this context? This work is meant to be part of a movement towards a planning culture that supports transformation processes in a sustainable way and empowers people to actively shape them. In the spirit of processual experimentation and learning on the project, the outcome was open-ended and characterized by an exploratory research approach. Systems are complex and only a first insight and a single perspective is presented here.

Hannah Nowak finished her bachelor’s degree in architecture at RWTH Aachen University after studying in Cologne and Aachen in 2022. Currently she is pursuing her master’s at RWTH Aachen University.
