An Investigation of Associations as Drivers of Grassroots Urban Governance
Vereint euch! Eine Untersuchung von Vereinen als Treiber basisdemokratischer Stadtgestaltung am Beispiel der Mittelstadt Detmold ist als Masterthesis 2022 an der RWTH Aachen bei Prof. Anne-Julchen Bernhardt und Prof. Dr. Agnes Förster entstanden. Dieser Beitrag ist eine Zusammenfassung.
Vereine sind seit Langem elementarer Bestandteil sozialen Lebens in Deutschland. Doch bieten sie die Möglichkeit darüber hinaus aktiv an der Gestaltung unserer Städte teilzuhaben? In dem Beitrag wird das Vereinswesen auf seine Zukunftsfähigkeit und als Form der basisdemokratischen Selbstorganisation in Mittelstädten untersucht. Dabei werden Handlungsfelder durch Zuhilfenahme von Kapitalarten als Zugriff auf unterschiedliche Ressourcen identifiziert und miteinander verglichen. So heterogen wie die Vereinslandschaft selbst, sind auch die Erkenntnisse. Der Gestaltungswille der Vereine ist da, doch die Rolle als stadtgestaltender Treiber besitzen nicht alle, aus unterschiedlichen Gründen. Vorgestellt werden Verbesserungsvorschläge, die zum Teil in der eigens geschaffenen Website vereint-euch.de angewandt werden.

Associations have long been a fundamental part of social life in Germany. But do they offer the possibility to actively participate in the shaping of our cities? This article examines the future viability of associations as a form of grassroots self-organization in medium-sized cities. In doing so, fields of action are identified and compared with each other by using types of capital as access to different resources. The findings are as heterogeneous as the association landscape itself. The associations’ will to shape the city is there, but not all of them have the role of city-shaping drivers, for different reasons. Suggestions for improvement are presented, some of which are applied in the specially created website vereint-euch.de.
